RPG Game Mechanic Idea - Damage Arrays

I was thinking about an idea for weapon damage that uses only a single d6, but provides a great amount of utility. My idea is a "Damage Array." Consider the following:

Unarmed Attack Damage 0, 0, 0, 1, 1 ...
Dagger 1, 1, 1, 1 ...
Short Sword 1, 2, 2, 2 ...
Staff 1, 2, 2, 2, 2 ...

In these examples, you would roll 1d6 and simply consult the array. In a situation where you roll higher that the number of positions in the array you would note the highest number possible and roll again adding results.

The unarmed fighter and the staff wielding fighter would reroll on a roll of 6, while the dagger and sword fighters would reroll on 5 or 6. This method provides a lot of variety.

A magic dagger might look like this: 1, 1, 2, 2 ...   or this:  1, 1, 1 ...
