I know that I like a game when I immediately begin imagining what it will be like to play it and how I am going to change the rules. RPG Kids is just such a game.
I have a 5 year old daughter and I think that RPG Kids just might be PERFECT for her. The game is simple (as it should be) ... You have Sword Guys (adjacent attacks only), Bow and Arrow Guys (ranged attacks only), and Magic Guys (ranged attacks only). Rolls are all opposed. I roll a die, my little girl rolls a die. High roll indicates success. Simple.
I love the simple elegance of the rules and will absolutely play this with my daughter soon (I will try to post a play review after next weekend.)
I do have one house rule / improvement that I intend to make. One of the unique aspects of RPGs is the ever evolving nature of the characters that "live" there.
The game uses two different kinds of dice, D6 and D12, but I really don't see why (except that kids LOVE all the dice.) D6 is used for initiative, D12 for everything else, but as all rolls are opposed ... this could really be any dice.
Enter my House Rule: Characters roll dice type based on Level.
We can start with the D6 and introduce more dice each time we play. This same die can be used for initiative, attack and defense and no rules need to change.
Level 0 (Monsters only) use a d4.
Level 1 use a d6.
Level 2 use a d8.
Level 3 use a d10.
Level 4 use a d12.
Each time a player chooses to play the same character from the last time she played, that character's level improves (up to a level of 4.)
Monsters controlled by an adult game master can be higher or lower level than the characters in the good guys party to vary the challenge.
That's it!
For me, the highest praise I can give a game is to begin "house ruling" it. It means I love the game enough to want to make it my own. I can only hope that others will do the same with some of my games one day.
Regards,
Jeff
