Scribd Empire!

So, I want to blog for a moment about "Scribd" ... what an awesome place. A depository for PDF's and other Documents the way that YouTube is a place to share video. I've put the majority of my games out there, skipping the 24 hour projects in favor of their more evolved cousins and gave Scribd a little browse myself. I was quite pleased to find a little gem of an RPG called "Star Empire." What a fun piece of work!

Star Empire is a game based on the idea of "The Last Starfighter" ... skills are actually named after video games and computer games like "Galaga" and "Warcraft."

I think this excerpt about the games tone pretty much sums up the spirit of the game for me:

"You’re playing a teenager in an interstellar war. Let’s face it: this is not a highly believable scenario on any level. A key to enjoying space opera is to avoid considering what’s happening too closely. Start asking “why” and the GM will have to start making up stuff about midiclorians, and no one wants that. You’re a huge hero in a galaxy-wide revolution. Sit back and enjoy it."

And yet in all this silliness there's some really nice mechanics concerning what drives a character, measuring the character's involvement in events and self-confidence. These rules serve the setting well and set Star Empire apart as something more than just a fun read. This looks to be a playable (and enjoyable RPG) and I can't wait to give Star Empire a try.

In the meantime, why don't you give Scribd a look yourself? It's a great idea. A place for authors to share their personal projects or OMG discoveries from across the web. There's a handful of ancient abandoned-ware RPG scans here as well as some original works and supplemental materials. Give Scribd visit, you'll be glad that you did.
